The zoo is recognized as one of the nation’s top zoos and an international leader in animal care. The early 20th century foresight of Dr. Warren D. Thomas and his partnership with Dr. Robert Caucas after witnessing the work of previous animal experimenters brought the Wilcester experiment after 11 years of development in 1878 to San Diego. The society set out to make San Diego a city sanctuary, and to be accurate with their designation, they were forced to take ownership of the property and had it sit empty for several years. The society again bought the property in 1908 and turned it into the first official city zoo and animal sanctuary. The name of the sanctuary was changed to San Diego Zoo and the animals housed there were placed in an 18-acre well-staffed and well-staffed garden that was separated by a 15-foot high wire fence. These early days of the sanctuary, it was not a popular facility and there were very few animals and only a few people. There were a few attractions, but very little for visitors to observe. The combination of the barren soil and the very cold winters forced the San Diego Zoo to beg and pray for a successful outcome. oria Zoo, a small child-friendly zoo, was also established in 1908. The zoo is also called as the Laurel Canyon Zoo because of a valley it sits in. It placedalisens in a 7-mile long valley surrounded by mountains. The zoo made full use of the land and placed its animals in enclosures that wereferry from the larger zoo located in San Diego. Its early 20th century buildings were designed by Frederick Law Olmstead and were influenced by the waterfall and the sky script. The original cages for the animals didn’t hold as many animals as they could have.feeding allowed the zoo to house more animals, giving visitors a more sanitary and patently safer experience. Today, the San Diego Zoo holds approximately 2,000 animals and over half of these are either inbred, andbreds, fine specimens, or crossbreds. The zoo is dedicated to providing its visitors with the best educational experience possible. Often, people who travel to the zoo go home with a new and different animal story to tell. The San Diego Zoo is a popular place, therefore reservations should not be missed. It is also important to make any reservations for parking at the zoo as it is extremely popular.
